ABI Urges People with Damaged Homes to Contact Insurers

July 23rd, 2009

Homeowners who have suffered damage to their property due to recent weather conditions have been advised to contact their insurer as soon as possible. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) explained that insurance firms will be expecting a busy period following the recent heavy snowfalls, with more severe weather due to hit parts of the UK this week.Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI, said that people whose homes have been damaged by snow or heavy rain should get in touch with their insurer without hesitation.”Events like this are exactly why people take out insurance,” he commented.”Insurers plan for bad weather and will have arrangements in place to minimise distress and inconvenience and help people recover as quickly as possible.”The ABI has also advised homeowners in flood-risk areas to minimise the potential damage to their properties by moving possessions onto upper floors and listening out for weather warnings. Some parts of southern England have experienced the equivalent of one month’s rainfall in the last 24 hours, with river levels currently under close observation in Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.Insurance is an essential way to protect yourself and your family from economic hardship in the future. It is prudent to make sure that you have a policy that will give you peace of mind and that will cover you if the unpredicted occurs. A home is probably the greatest asset that you will own and getting a Unison home insurance policy is a sound move.
